Real Life Sciences commemorates World Cancer Day 2018

Real Life Sciences Singapore observes World Cancer Day in hopes to raise awareness and engage discussion around cancer prevention today.

Across Asia, there is a persisting lack of awareness about early symptoms and delayed diagnosis which has inevitably contributed to poor survival rates. Singapore in particular has the highest number of cancer cases diagnosed in Southeast Asia, and the rates are increasing every year.

At Real Life Sciences Singapore, we stand alongside medical professionals and specialists who are concerned about or diagnosed with cancer. From preventative care to diagnosis, through treatment and recovery, we understand the importance of ongoing care and careful monitoring for cancer. Ultimately, more needs to be done to raise awareness to support medical professionals and even policy-makers to plan greater strategies for cancer control.

We are honoured to have Melissa Yambao from Hong Kong via Skype with us, a cancer survivor to share with the office on her journey of battling breast cancer. Breast cancer currently ranks 1st in the Top 10 list of cancers affecting women in Singapore reported by the National Cancer Centre of Singapore.

Melissa shares her story:

“Prior to diagnosis, I have been going for regular check-ups annually. The toughest period I faced was the period of uncertainty when I found out about my diagnosis. However, I stayed optimistic. What pushed me was to live my normal day to day life. I went to work, I met my friends. It is always good to take a pause when you hit a wall and have a moment to yourself. What motivated me the most was to look forward to the things I wanted to do. 4 weeks after recovery I have already begun Pilates, and I’ve also taken up pole dancing.

My advice to everyone out there is to take preventive care, have annual check-ups, maintain a good diet as sugar feeds cancer, and most importantly to sleep enough hours as it allows us to recover from the damages we’ve faced through the day.”

We were also pleased to have a consulting medical doctor who shared with us about monitoring a drug in crucial phase to assist potentially release as a commercial cancer treatment.

As part of our #INSPIREDBYYOU campaign, Real Life Sciences believes that every person we place in the medical market makes a difference.

World Cancer day is observed globally on February 4th. Everything begins with a single step, so join the cause, spread the word, and take ownership of your health today.
