How data breaches in healthcare impact your recruitment drive

The average economic impact of a data breach to a healthcare organisation is $2.4 million - in the US alone, data breaches have cost the healthcare industry $6.2 billion. And security risks don’t just pose a financial concern; your company’s reputation could also be impacted. We spoke with Liam McKeown, Business Development Manager at Real Staffing, to find out more.

Value of data breaches

The health sector is one of the most ‘at risk’ global industries when it comes to data breaches. In the UK alone, the industry accounts for nearly half (43%) of all data breaches to the country. And a survey from Accenture revealed that healthcare data breaches affected more than one in four of all U.S. consumers.

Data breaches have resulted in a significant loss of revenue and damage to the reputation of healthcare companies. The amount of breaches in the industry is growing; as more systems are ripe for innovation, hackers become more adept at learning how to invade them.

Cyber Security risks

The healthcare industry has enjoyed significant innovation and advancements to technology. While this is extremely beneficial to functionality and process performance, it comes with associated risks. As discussed in our article, ‘How big data has changed the face of healthcare’ technology streams such as big data and artificial intelligence are re-shaping the healthcare industry. This does, however, lead to cyber security related issues.

According to Liam, “Innovation in healthcare is obviously a brilliant thing. However, it’s essential that as more technologies are introduced, you have the right talent in place to protect your organisation.”

Information governance toolkit

One of the biggest factors leading to a demand for security professionals is the Information Governance Toolkit, which outlines policies and standards that all healthcare organisations must adhere to. Due to the increase of security threats within the industry, the toolkit’s becoming increasingly extensive each year, in an effort to minimise the risk of a breach.

This significantly impacts recruitment within the sector. As Liam explains, “In the past, one person’s been able to manage the toolkit and guarantee businesses are complying with the necessary policies. However, as technology advances, threats become bigger and the toolkit becomes more extensive, meaning more professionals are needed to work on Information Governance.”

And we’re not just seeing an increase in personnel; there’s also a wider variety of positions becoming available. More specialists across cyber security, compliance, and governance are significantly in demand, leading to a skills shortage within the industry.

The importance of being compliant

The healthcare industry has always faced security issues, which is why it’s important companies are doing all they can to remain compliant. If not, the risks are severe, with heavy fines and even the potential for criminal charges to be brought against organisations and individuals.

It’s essential you have the right people in place to cover a range of compliance related issues, from referencing to clinical governance. As we said earlier, it’s not just a loss of revenue you need to worry about; if you don’t have the correct procedures in place, your reputation could be severely damaged.
