Be a good manager with new normal leadership qualities

Leadership qualities are acquired through practice. It can be honed and cultivated through continuous application, and it is not something you are born with contrary to popular belief.

Most would know that qualities of a good leader include integrity, accountability, empathy, humility, resilience, vision, influence, and positivity. However, leadership have evolved tremendously over the years in an age of innovation and disruption. Now, leadership styles are gravitating towards a ‘transformational’ approach.

What is transformational leadership?

Transformational leadership is one of the many leadership styles in which leaders encourage, inspire and motivate employees to innovate and create change that will help grow and shape the future success of the company.

A transformational leadership team inspire and motivate their workforce without micromanaging — they trust trained employees to take authority over decisions in their assigned jobs. It’s a management style that’s designed to give employees more room to be creative, look to the future and find new solutions to old problems.

How to be a ‘good manager’ with top leadership qualities to have today:

A good manager in the new normal is one that possess the following transformational leadership qualities:

Listen with intent when with your team members

Active listening is one of the many undervalued leadership qualities that is, unfortunately, often neglected in the modern working world. Managers and business leaders are just not trained well enough to be able to listen properly, and instead they listen to respond. They listen, simply, for the sake of it.

Active listening builds trust and relationships in the long run with the new normal. Good leaders communicate with care, focus on the person and the message; they don't interrupt what is being said. And that is what organisations need; leaders who listen to its people. Acquiring this skill is not easy; it requires self-awareness and humility to respect others’ thoughts.

Be transparent and open when communicating

Another leadership quality that is undermined apart from active listening, is the ability to communicate comprehensively and clearly. Communicate frequently and with transparency have been key in adapting to the new normal of work. Harvard professor Amy Edmondson said, “Transparency is job one for leaders in a crisis. Be clear about what you know, what you don’t know, and what you are doing to learn more.”

Today, leaders are also having to manage waves of unforeseen crises. Open communication will support managers in addressing the core human emotions of grief, loss, and anxiety in the workplace especially during the pandemic.

Forge genuine bonds and relationships

Connecting authentically means being open with your vision, your fears and your aspirations for others, and being open to honest dialogue. When you come across as authentic, people see you as more human, sympathetic, and relatable, and will naturally gravitate towards you. This is so essential as a leadership skill in inspiring loyalty, trust, and commitment, especially now during these times and in a new normal.

Always have a vision

Be a leader who is visionary - be forward-looking and agile to change. A visionary leadership style embraces the unknown as a blank canvas for innovation, experimentation and pioneering new possibilities. They recognise the importance of performing as a collective team that has clear goals and understand their role in making this vision for the future a reality.

Visionary leaders inspire their team to strive boldly in achieving new heights without fear. Leading with vision will inspire your team to go above and beyond their potential. And this is what a good manager comprises of.

Below is a selection of leadership quotes from some very successful leaders in the world:

"It's important to have a vision, and not let it go."

— Özlem Türeci

"Anyone who claims to be a leader must speak like a leader. That means speaking with integrity and truth."

— Kamala Harris

Leadership is lifting a person's vision to high sights, the raising of a person's performance to a higher standard, the building of a personality beyond its normal limitations.

— Peter Drucker

"As we look ahead into the next century, leaders will be those who empower others."

— Bill Gates

"The very essence of leadership is that you have to have vision. You can't blow an uncertain trumpet."

— Theodore M. Hesburgh

We hope that one of these leadership quotes can inspire you to work towards being a good manager and a revolutionary leader in this new normal.
